AQHA Approved Introductory Show

It’s never been easier to show at an AQHA Introductory Show! Did you know...

1. You don’t need to own the horse that you will be showing in Novice classes.   Starting in 2011 AQHA rules now allow a Novice exhibitor to show a horse that they do not own without applying for non-owned permits.

2. Only the exhibitor needs to be a member of AQHA (not the owner). An exhibitor can fill out the paperwork and purchase a membership right at the show if they don’t already have one.

3. Only mares and gelding are allowed to compete in AQHA Novice classes. If you your now-gelding has not had his papers updated we can stamp them (original registration certificates only, not copies) and inform AQHA of the updated information. Have a horse that needs his papers updated but you don’t plan on bringing him to the show?  We can still stamp the original certificate and let AQHA know.

5. Unlike many open shows, in AQHA Halter, Showmanship and Trail classes only Western tack and attire are allowed.  Any English class must be shown huntseat, never saddleseat.

Thanks to the AQHA Introductory Show program Winning Weekends is able to offer Novice Youth and Novice Amateur classes. The Novice program is designed for exhibitors new to AQHA shows.  Novice classes, especially those offered at an Introductory Show provide a great opportunity to branch out, try something new and have the the chance to show an AQHA registered horse against other horses and riders of a similar skill level. Winning Weekends is pleased to be able to offer our exhibitors this experience in an environment that they are comfortable competing in.

To show as a Novice in AQHA competition an exhibitor cannot have earned 25 or more total AQHA points (including Novice, Youth/Amateur and Open) in a specific skill set. If you are eligible as a Novice exhibitor on January 1st of a year you remain eligible for the rest of the calendar year even if you “point out” of a specific skill set.

Novice Youth classes are open to youth exhibitors 18 & under.  Novice Amateur classes are open to exhibitors over 18 who meet the AQHA definition of an Amateur.  In simple terms and Amateur is someone who has not received ANY compensation for training, instructing, teaching, judging or in any other way acting as a professional for the past 5 year.  Complete rules regarding amateur status can be found in the AQHA Handbook.

To enter AQHA classes at the Winning Weekends Show & Tell event you will have to bring the following to the show office to sign up:

1. AQHA Registration Certificate for the horse being entered. The original certificate is preferred, but a clear legible copy of the FRONT and BACK will be accepted.
2. All usual health paper work for horse being entered. (Coggins dated 2010 or 2011 {within 12 months if drawn out of state} and Rabies within one year)
3. Exhibitor’s AQHA membership card showing Youth or Amateur membership and Novice “skill sets” listed on the back. Memberships may be purchased at the show, and Novice endorsement can be added to an existing Youth or Amateur membership.
4. The desire to try something NEW!
